Before each trip | Verify electrical connection between trailer and vehicle |
Verify trailer running lights, break lights, and turn signals are functioning properly | |
Verify breakaway breaks are operable, ensure connections are clean and battery is fully charged, if present | |
If trailer has surge brakes, check the master cylinder level | |
Always use chains and verify chains are crossed in an X pattern from trailer to tow vehicle | |
Check coupler and hitch ball for cracks, pits, and flats | |
Ensure that the ball mount and hitch ball are of the appropriate size for the trailer you intend to tow | |
Check locking device regularly and ensure that all necessary safey pins and other equipment are in use | |
Regularly (every couple of weeks or so) | Check tire pressure, tread wear, tread depth |
At least every 6 months | Check for grease forming around wheel hub exterior, if grease is present a bearing repack may be needed |
Inspect and service the wear and current draw of your electric brakes (magnet), if present | |
Check power output (amperage) and modulation of your electric brake controller in your tow vehicle, if present | |
Inspect safety chains and hooks for wear and damage | |
Annually (or every 12,000 miles) | Repack bearings |
Inspect brake shoes and drums | |
Inspect wiring for bare spots, cracks, or fraying | |
Inspect trailer jack(s), structural welds, axle attachment bolts, and structure frame members for wear or damage and repair/replace as needed |
